New Deadend

Well here's the story behind "Previewing"

This project has been in the works for years of course.  But things are finally taking on a more concrete form.

For years this small city has been the last bottleneck on the US 74 "connector" between I 85 and I 26 into the North Carolina mountains.

And now work has finally begun on the new US 74 Bypass.

Here's a look west, toward the beginning of this new highway.

It actually begins up in Mooresboro, several miles away.

And a closer look at this bridge over the "Brushy Creek".

Now let's have a look in the other direction.

Things seem to be progressing in this area as well.  It looks like the grading is pretty much finished.

But wait!

This road is going nowhere.

What  is going on?

Well, between the end of this new road and those trees just ahead is the 1st Broad River.

(The Fuzz isn't sure why it is the 1st Broad… but that's another issue)

It looks like taking a ride here might end in a car wash of sorts!

 So it might still be a while before anyone gets to take a drive on this one.

Local Fun

This is not a major metropolitan area, but this weekend we had our own local "Comic Con"!

It was actually a pretty big deal.

Actually this was the second one.  The Fuzz hadn't gone to the first, but thought it would be interesting to check it out this time.

And it was worth the trip over there, even in the rain.

This one was twice as big as the first was.

The Fuzz enjoyed seeing the art and costumes.

A Hopeful Sign

While The Fuzz was out in the Woods the other day doing a bit of work in his shop…

He noticed these little guys.

Perhaps Spring is on the way!

Sure, it will be a while yet, but this is a hopeful sign.

It has been a rough winter for The Fuzz, but this is not the place to go into that now.

But this first little sign of Spring is an encouraging thing.

Lurking in Alleys

We know it sounds a bit sinister, but The Fuzz has been lurking around in alleys lately.

So here we have…

This is a bit unusual place.

What are all those plants doing in this doorway?

What is going on inside there?

And there is an "inside" involved…

A parking place.

Back in it's day, this was a large department store.  But it suffered the fate of so many and lay empty for a long time…

Until someone got the idea for this renovation.

The original building was pretty much eliminated except for the part along the street.

This was converted into small shops with apartments above.

As can be seen, the steel framing and exterior walls were left, but the inside was converted into parking for the tenants.

Seems like a pretty good idea.

And here is that bit of color The Fuzz promised…

The Fuzz found this lineup in one of the alleys and couldn't resist playing with it.

Maybe he has too much time on his hands.

Windows

No…

This has nothing to do with Microsoft…

A few days ago Our Fuzz was wandering around the uptown area, where he frequents a coffee house.

His wanderings took him through various alleys and such.  These places have always intrigued him in a way.  Perhaps in having spent years working in trash collection, he developed an affinity for the near, but unseen parts of the city.  These are the places behind the facades of the shops most people pass every day.

One thing that captured his interest on this day was windows…

…and the textures of the brick walls.

So here are a few windows that The Fuzz wanted to share.

Kinda makes him wonder what up in there.

This one was a bit closer to the ground. The Fuzz could see in there.

Looks like a lot of remodeling.

The Fuzz promises that he will get a bit of color up next time.

The Fuzz's posts have been mostly colorless lately.

So perhaps it's time to take a break and add a bit of color.

The Fuzz was over in the woods trying to photograph Dragonflies, when he came upon this little spot of light and couldn't resist trying to capture it.

It is a nice change from this cold and grey time of year.

But The fuzz is glad to see things warming up a bit now.

It is still a long ways till Spring!

Winter Finally Came

Well it looks like winter finally made it here.

And not only with snow, there are these 10° mornings as well.

 It kinda makes one wonder about this Global Warming sometimes.

But winter is winter after all.

Actually, the snow is beautiful to see.  And around here we don't usually have to deal with it for all that long.  Folks mostly just stay home, and let the young'uns enjoy themselves.

The Fuzz and His Sweetie did enjoy a walk along the local riverwalk.  It was a nice little bit of exercise, and they went for some cheesecake and coffee to warm up afterwards.

Might as well enjoy the snow while it's here.
