Chores

Back home from our adventures. Now it was time for a few chores. There was the usual firewood stuff. The Fuzz had to cut some of the longer pieces down a bit to fit in the various stoves. While he was at all that, he gave the stovepipe a good brushing. Then His Sweetie and he pulled a few weeds out of the garden.
Today, he was confronted with this Funky Fishtank Filter.
So now we have Happy Fishes.
And then, there were all these ashes in the heater. Actually, this was not too bad. But with these warm afternoons, and the fire being out, it was a good chance to get them before laying up a new fire.
And so life goes on, not a lot of excitement. But if the weather is right, there may be something for this weekend.

Looks like an Aqua-Clear filter. Guessing from the size of the filter I would say your tank is no larger than 10 gallons.

Do you have a heater for that tank? I would think so, as it gets really cold where you are. I would recommend 10 watts per gallon if you keep tropicals, as they like warm tropical like water. If the tank is in an area that gets cold - you may need those 10 watts per gallon.

If the tank is in a warmer location, then 5 watts per gallon may work for you.

I know nothing about wood burning stoves, or fire place maintenance.

We just keep goldfish in there, so there's no heater.

L- the tank is a little bigger than that, the filter is suposed to handle up to 20gal. Goldfish are nasty.

YES THEY ARE! That is why I never kept goldfish. Those "fancy" goldfish are the worst. It is actually too hot here, even with the AC on. So I would need what is called a chiller, which is just another AC for the fish that would pull the water temp even lower. Those things are expensive. A lot of people skip the chiller for that reason.

By the way, the general rule for goldfish is to take the advertised filter capacity, and cut it in half. On account of their nastiness. Regular partial water changes also become more important. Siphon the water from the gravel to get all the poop out.

In my opinion, goldfish are a pain. Tropicals are much easier.

Yeah, we frequently change about half the water.

When I do a water change, it is only 1 or 2 gallons out of 6.

I only change the water when my nitrate test kit indicates about 40 or 60 ppm. For 40 ppm (or less) one gallon is good enough. 60 ppm and I change two gallons.

I use distilled water (not a scam even if it is bottled) with some 7.0 PH buffer in it.

Since the tank is only 6 gallons, and it only needs water changes every other week or so, it does not cost too much to use distilled water.
